Why do documentaries have to be long, boring and only seen on PBS? You know, those “insomnia inducing” documentaries with the Kens Burns effect of sepia-tone antique photographs floating across the screen with violin music playing in the background. We believe that using traditional “television video techniques” produces lackluster documentaries that are informative. But they are not engaging, entertaining, impactful or persuasive.

The filmmakers at Dream Chaser Media take a different approach to documentary production – whether it is a corporate documentary, branded documentary, short documentary or a feature length documentary. Our approach is to treat a documentary as a short movie or short film. We use “Hollywood filmmaking techniques” vs “video television techniques”. We shoot scenes in very cinematic low light with a shallow depth-of-field that produces dramatic, stunning shots. We use jibs, cranes, sliders, dollies and steady-cams to move our cameras so the viewer is always compelled to keep watching. Our editing style is fast paced so sometimes a shot is only seen for half a second to create drama. Even the music we use in a documentary can be composed just for that production to evoke emotions – vs. using the same generic royalty-free music everyone else uses. The benefit of our approach is that the viewer will be excited and captivated by our documentaries. Just think about it, it is exciting to see a movie in a movie theater (even if it is not a great movie). But when you flip the television channel at home to another show, is that “exciting” or just another boring television show?
